An Egg-Filled Easter Special

As a kid, Easter to me meant eggs. And candy of course. We would enjoy eggs for breakfast with all sorts of other goodies, and a basket full of candy that followed. Occasionally we would buy the dye and go to town dyeing eggs a day or so in advance. After growing up and reading more about DIY Easter egg dyeing, we finally went for the natural route. Yes, it is going to be more difficult and take more time. But it seems kids tend to enjoy a more challenging experience, so why not give it a try? Plus, it’s way better for you physically, using all natural and edible ingredients, and mentally ’cause you worked on and completed a project on your own. And believe it or not, the colors turn out pretty well.
Some things to take note of: the yellow and blue were the best colors. You can try mixing those two ingredients together to get a green, or mixing and matching other colors together to get combinations. Perhaps the blue and pink will make a nice purple. If you’d like to add a print, you will need to use a stocking to hold it in place. For example: a parsley leaf laid on top of the egg with a stocking wrapped around it and then set in the dye will give you a marble outcome with a leaf print. Or you can wrap string or rubber bands around the eggs before putting in the dye to make different patterns. The more you experiment, the more fun it will be. We did a simple one-color dye for this recipe. Check out the details below.
After we dyed them and set them out for the morning, we would make them into deviled eggs for Easter dinner. One of the many benefits of naturally dyeing your eggs is that you can make them into deviled eggs later and not have to worry about ingesting the chemicals that seep through. Here is our favorite deviled eggs recipe that never fails.
The morning of Easter, though, was the most exciting part. My mom and dad would create an epic Easter egg hunt for all six of us. This must have taken them hours to prep, but it was so much fun. They would hide these plastic eggs in various nooks and corners of our property each with a clue inside, bringing us to the next hiding spot. Once we were all up and ate our breakfast, we would all be set loose to go find them. Need inspiration for Easter breakfast? Here are some of our favorite breakfast recipes from our blog.
Grain-Free Winter Squash Pancakes
Steel Cut Oat Granola (still my favorite granola to date!)
Egg Bake with Spinach and Mushrooms
Baked Egg with Sweets and Greens
At the end of the hunt we were rewarded with marshmallow peeps, chocolate candy and prizes.
To this day, we still do this hunt, just with the next generation. And instead of store-bought marshmallow peeps, and milk chocolate candy for our reward, we have put together some of our favorite homemade treats you can put in the basket this Easter.
Vegan Truffle Bites (such a tasty treat, we make often)
Paleo Chocolate Chunk Cookies with Avocado and Almonds
Sweet Potato Brownies with Walnuts (perfect when you have leftover sweet potatoes!)
Enjoy!
