As I attend and present at midwifery and birthing conferences on behalf of the ICPA, I am constantly reminded that midwives and doulas are aligned with chiropractors in numerous ways. Some of the common bonds we share are:

  • Knowledge of and trust in the body’s inner wisdom.
  • Skills and objectives focusing on working with the body’s normal function and natural healing abilities.
  • Support and commitment towards non-traumatic, non-invasive birthing procedures.

These common bonds are essential ingredients to a natural, safe, and non-invasive birth. Women who have selected midwives, doulas, and doctors of chiropractic to care for them throughout pregnancy benefit significantly from this choice. They are surrounding themselves with providers who will offer them the personal care and on-going commitment to their individual needs both physically and emotionally. Throughout pregnancy, and in preparation for birth, this type of care is filling a huge gap in our impersonal, non-supportive, technological society.

Today’s woman is looking forward to more than just a scheduled procedure; she is looking for an on-going supportive team of providers who will share an intimate life experience. Therefore, it is imperative that she choose providers who can honor her choices and most importantly her own self throughout her pregnancy and birth.

If you are under regular chiropractic care, ask your doctor for a recommendation for natural birthing. Even if you are already under the care of a birth-care provider, if you have any concerns that your personal needs will not be respected, you still have the option to select someone who will give you and your baby the kind of care you both deserve.

All in all, the choices you make throughout pregnancy will play a significant role in the outcome of the birth. Today’s woman recognizes that she needs a support team that addresses her physical and emotional needs. During pregnancy, choose wisely and select providers who support your inherent ability to give birth naturally.
