A Life Force Awakened: How Acupuncture Helped Me Conceive Naturally at 46

By Sheri Despointes

At age 46, just months after a miscarriage and still a newlywed, time was racing against me. I found myself grasping at what felt like a vanishing dream: becoming a mother and having a family. The yearning to have a child grew stronger with every passing month. Each new cycle brought hope and heartbreak. While I had conceived naturally at 45, I soon learned that repeating that feat was medically improbable. According to a recommended fertility specialist, my chances of conceiving again with my own eggs were less than 1%. But I could not let go of the hope, no matter how small, that remained.

The Formidable Reality of “Realistic” Expectations

After months of charting, timing, testing, and waiting, I finally took my OB/GYN’s advice and visited a fertility clinic hoping for help. Instead, I was met with the devastating truth: My chances of natural conception were nearly nonexistent. Even with interventions like IVF, there were no guarantees, and the risks were steep, including chromosomal abnormalities, miscarriage, stillbirth, and complications for both me and the baby.

The realization of just how difficult it would be to have a baby left me heart stricken. As I sat across from the doctor, my eyes filled with tears, as I started processing the overwhelming feelings of grief. Only partially listening to the doctor’s matter of fact explanation, as he went on to describe how donor eggs and IVF treatments would work. This option was not one I had been thinking about, nor was I interested in hearing all the details.

Then came the casual mention, almost an afterthought: “Some of my patients find acupuncture helpful…” The doctor handed me a business card. I took it more out of politeness than belief. But that tiny opening became the doorway to something far greater than I expected.

In trusting what is beyond our understanding, we are guided along a new path—one that teaches us to appreciate life and love further than we ever imagined possible.

An Open Heart and Skeptical Mind Opens Itself to Change

Despite my doubts, I scheduled a consultation. The acupuncturist spent nearly two hours with me, asking me questions that no other doctor had ever considered and afterwards to see my tongue. For the first time, I learned I had Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), something I had never been formally diagnosed with, despite years of symptoms.

She explained how Chinese medicine views fertility as a matter of energy balance, not just eggs and hormones. Acupuncture, she said, could help regulate my cycles, improve circulation, reduce stress, and support my body’s own healing capacity.

Her words resonated with something beyond my thinking mind, and I had no other options. Despite my skepticism, I moved forward in what would become the first of many sessions immediately following my initial consultation.

The Sacred Space of Healing

Needlessly anxious, my first session was quite the opposite of whatever my mind had imagined. I did not feel the needles as they were placed in points along my feet and elsewhere. In the dim light, with gentle music playing and the scent of sandalwood in the air, my body began to relax in a way I had not felt in years. Halfway through the 25-minute session, I heard subtle gurgles in my stomach, and they were not hunger, but something shifting, something moving.

I committed to two acupuncture sessions a week and began taking Chinese herbs as prescribed. After the first month or so, I noticed changes. My menstrual cycles became lighter and less painful. After two months, my cycles became more regular. My moods stabilized. The obsessive mental chatter that had consumed me about time, odds, and statistics began to quiet. I was not just treating my fertility. I was caring for my whole self.

Reclaiming My Body’s Wisdom

Western medicine had painted a grim picture. But here, in the quiet presence of this ancient practice, I began to feel something different. I did not feel “too old,” or that I was running out of time. My body wasn’t adhering to a ticking clock, it was an intelligent, responsive system, deeply connected to something larger than myself.

Chinese medicine speaks of Qi (“Chee”), the life force that flows through us. When it is blocked or stagnant, illness or imbalance occurs. When it flows freely, life moves forward. As my treatments progressed, I felt this subtle yet powerful flow.

After three cycles of acupuncture and herbs, my period was late, and I felt an inner knowing. After taking so many pregnancy tests over nearly a year, this one was finally and clearly positive.

I felt overjoyed, relieved, and overwhelmingly grateful. Still aware of the risks ahead, nothing could dim the glow of life radiating throughout my body and spirit.

A Healthy, Normal Pregnancy—at 47

I continued with weekly acupuncture sessions through my first and into my second trimester. My pregnancy was gratefully uneventful. No major complications. No need for an expected c-section. My healthy, radiant daughter was born vaginally—full-term, strong, and beautiful.

There are no scientific explanations for what happened. Not long before, I had been told that this was virtually impossible. And yet, here she was, real, vibrant, and full of life. I believe her life force had been waiting for the “right” environment within my body in which to grow. While acupuncture could not reverse the age of my eggs, it helped my body become balanced and strong enough to support her life.

Now, when I look at my daughter, I see not just a child, but a story of resilience, love, and life flowing in its own radiant, mysterious way.

For Those Still Hoping

If you are on the path of fertility, especially if you feel like all doors have closed, know this: There may still be another way. One that begins not in another procedure or protocol, but in a quiet return to your own body’s wisdom.

Acupuncture might not be the answer for everyone. But for me, it became the lifeline I did not know I was seeking. It invited my life force to awaken, and it allowed love to find its way against the odds, and into another realm of possibility.
