What we’ve been saying for years…
Author // Jeanne Ohm, DC
I find it so interesting when mainstream medicine research catches up to what clinical, holistic care has been observing for decades. Last week, these 4 studies came across my desk from Medscape Pediatrics…
- Stop the Pop: Soda Linked to Aggression in Kids
- Feds Investigate Antipsychotic Prescribing in Children
- Early ‘Junk Food’ Exposure Risks Kids’ Mental Health
- More Proof Antipsychotics Boost Kids’ Diabetes Risk
…And my response? Finally!
Chiropractors, homeopaths, naturopaths, yes all practitioners who adhere to vitalistic principles have been warning against these drugs and poor lifestyle behaviors since their inception and these practitioners have been labeled “quacks”, fools, unscientific for claiming what they knew to be true. Now, mainstream research catches up and this information finally hits the general population.
Although it would seem fair for a formal apology to holistic providers for their years of providing the truth to their patients based on their clinical findings and expertise, we know that will never happen. Sadder, though is the generations of kids who have not been given this information by their medical doctor, because his/ her medical education did not cover it, and their peers and the insurance industry erroneous disregarded holistic clinical findings as off evidence. The pyramid of evidenced based care as defined by Sackett clearly lists patient feedback and doctor findings as relevant (if not more) as published research. Sigh.
In the meantime, lets look at some constructive resources we have been offering parents for years…the suggestions and reasons why they should change these lifestyle behaviors:
- Stop the Pop: Soda Linked to Aggression in Kids – The Real Dangers of Soda to You and Your Child
- Feds Investigate Antipsychotic Prescribing in Children – The Relentless and Tragic Marketing of Psychiatric Drugs
- Early ‘Junk Food’ Exposure Risks Kids’ Mental Health —Better School’s Food List.
- More Proof Antipsychotics Boost Kids’ Diabetes Risk – ADD/HD: Holistic and Natural Approaches
And let’s face it, although criticized for using Google as a resource, parents are becoming informed about many health care options that their medical doctors are not even aware of. I do recommend to parents to become informed (and the Web is a great place to start) and help educate physicians how they, as practitioners can shed the bias of their education. If they are open…great. If not…look else where. Life is too short to compromise our personal principles and the well-being of our family. Surround yourself with parents and practitioners of like mind and heart. Then, choose wisely.
